2BeHEALTHY: Health Engagement After TBI - 2BeHEALTHY aims to improve long-term health outcomes by generating knowledge and creating programs that empower persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) to direct their health care. This will be achieved through two studies: 1) a randomized controlled trial evaluating a person-centered approach to enhance health engagement and self-efficacy in chronic TBI, and 2) a pilot study assessing the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) to train persons with TBI in lifelong self-care. Study 1 is a double-masked randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of Patient Priorities Care versus a structured interview (control) approach among persons with chronic TBI referred by a brain injury physician. At the intervention efficacy research stage, findings will inform future research to improve long-term TBI outcomes. Study 2 is a pilot mixed methods study evaluating barriers, facilitators, and satisfaction with a standard (not tailored for TBI) CDSMP. Knowledge from this intervention development stage study will guide CDSMP adaptations for chronic TBI. Together, these studies lay the groundwork for a transformative shift in chronic TBI management and advance the BeHEALTHY model for chronic brain injury management. Short-term outcomes include 1) new knowledge on the efficacy of a person-centered approach to enhance health outcomes for persons with TBI and 2) improved understanding of barriers, facilitators, and satisfaction with a standard CDSMP approach for chronic TBI. Long-term outcome will be increased health engagement with improved health outcomes, quality of life, and life expectancy. Dissemination targets are persons with TBI, their families, providers, and researchers, payers, policymakers, and community-based agencies, with products including educational resources, presentations, scientific publications, procedure manuals, policy briefs, and grant proposals.
