The purpose of the BRAVE (Building Resilience Against Violence Engagement) project is to develop and implement an comprehensive, innovative, evidence-based, community-focused, culturally and linguistically appropriate ?BRAVE Violence Prevention and Crime Reduction Model? for minority youth that can be readily replicated and utilized in African American, Hispanic and Asian American youth. Targeting 100 experimental minority youth with a matched 100 control group youth ages 12-15, (40 African American, 30 Hispanic and 30 Asian American youth in each group) in five impoverished and high-crime ridden communities in Chicago, the goals of BRAVE project are to increase the capacity of ethnic minority youth and their family to access public health services, to reduce their risk of exposure to violence and crime, and to improve their health and well-being by strengthening resilience and empowerment factors by incorporating public health and community-oriented policing approaches. In detail, the BRAVE project implements comprehensive three violence prevention strategies (i.e., Primary Prevention, Secondary Prevention or Intervention, Tertiary Prevention or Response) responding to both the types of risk factors and the intensity of violence each minority youth experienced by adopting three-level prevention strategy of Response to Intervention (RtI) framework and the ecosystem theory of youth violence. Furthermore, by collaborating with 12 community agencies (2 public health, 2 law enforcement, 4 schools, 4 behavioral health and social service agencies and 1 university), BRAVE project will provide individually tailored inter-professional case management services to develop safer and healthier youth, family and community environment. Based on the performance outcome evaluation which will be collected from 9 standardized performance measurements and qualitative clinical data during 4 years of project period, the BRAVE project will demonstrate that the ?BRAVE Violence Prevention and Crime Reduction Model? would be a shift from the individually-focused traditional violence prevention programs and fragmented services, to a comprehensive, holistic, community-focused, evidence-based, and inter-professionally collaborative minority youth violence prevention model.
