UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The University of California, San Francisco Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) enters its third decade prepared to catalyze research in an era of unparalleled advances in biomedical discovery. CTSI’s vision is to develop, implement, and disseminate translational science (TS) innovations across the full TS spectrum (T0-T5). Its mission is to apply TS principles to provide the tools, training, environment, resources, and partnerships that ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of translational research for the benefit of all patients, communities, and public health. CTSI is an institutional and national TS leader with resources and programs that have been adopted across the CTSA Consortium to accelerate novel informatics tools, improve the efficiency of research operations, train the next generation of skilled TS researchers, and promote meaningful community-engagement as essential to research endeavors. CTSI’s 6 overall Specific Aims match its Strategic Goals (Element A) and align with the NCATS Strategic Plan 2025-30 and the national CTSA Program Goals. Each CTSI Program (Elements B-E) proposes innovations for a specific TS focus aimed at overcoming distinct roadblocks or barriers across the research lifecycle. CTSI maintains robust Program evaluation to ensure that new initiatives bolster and accelerate the research enterprise. Notable areas of CTSI strength are: the application of the NCATS TS framework to all training and programmatic activities; serving as a nexus for development and dissemination of pivotal innovations and novel products; and amplifying community-engaged research. CTSI will deliver on its vision and mission through achievement of the following Aims/Strategic Goals: 1. Support an efficient and impactful Hub with a nimble central administrative unit that effectively responds to public health emergencies; 2. Design, test, and disseminate innovative TS resources, tools, methods, and services to accelerate the efficiency and effectiveness of translational research; 3. Engage with partners and collaborators locally, regionally, and nationally to advance the health of all populations; 4. Develop and implement training programs that promote team science and TS careers across a multidisciplinary workforce; 5. Create, promote, and disseminate programs that achieve improvements in community and population health; and 6. Implement activities that ensure the safety, quality, and operational efficiency of clinical and translational research, including the design and conduct of clinical trials. Expected outcomes. CTSI will improve health and healthcare by delivering: • A highly trained, multidisciplinary TS workforce • Meaningful improvements in community health through collaborations with public health systems, expanded community leadership, and community engagement Pilot awards • Efficient research operations, biobanking, and enhanced EHR-based recruitment technology • Optimized Learning Health Systems and new platforms for rapid evaluation of emerging digital technologies • Advanced capacity to conduct decentralized clinical trials.
