Thrive, Inc. and its community partners propose the Central Oklahoma Caregiver Impact and Innovation Network: Achieving Optimal Health and Preventing Teen Pregnancy and STIs. The project will establish, coordinate, fund and support a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary network of partners to develop, refine and test innovative interventions and to disseminate those shown to be effective in improving optimal health and preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Based on the body of research that indicates caregivers can impact risk and protective factors that are pivotal in teens' decision-making, Thrive has chosen caregivers as the Network’s priority area. This project was designed in response to Thrive's 2019 Community Engagement Assessment, which indicated that community-based organizations, houses of worship, and parents all desire information and guidance on how to initiate positive conversations with teens that convey sexual health messages that are medically accurate, age-appropriate, trauma informed and user-centered. The overarching goal of the project is to create and support a network of well-trained, connected partner organizations in Oklahoma County, OK that develop innovative, equitable and sustainable strategies that empower and equip caregivers to increase protective factors, resulting in improved optimal health and a reduction in STIs and teen pregnancy. There are additional goals tied to the overall Network: 1) To develop, create, and support a network of multidisciplinary organizations through a user-centered and equitable platform, resulting in increased authentic community engagement and a connected community infrastructure in Oklahoma Co. supportive of overall adolescent sexual health; and goals tied specifically to caregivers: 2) To explore, develop, test, refine, evaluate and disseminate human-centered innovative interventions for caregivers to increase protective factors while decreasing risk factors, resulting in helping youth achieve optimal health and prevent teen pregnancy and STIs. From the initial planning of its proposal, through the end of the proposed project, Thrive has used a human-centered design model, a model currently used too infrequently in designing programming in the nonprofit sector. Thrive has secured partnership agreements with five of central Oklahoma's leading nonprofit organizations that serve youth and families. These organizations, along with Thrive, will become the Network Core for the project - providing leadership, technical assistance and project management. With a commitment to equity, the program will also include a Context Expert Advisory Committee, composed of diverse community members with lived experience. Together, these groups will design a request for proposal (RFP), which will allow other local organizations to apply to join one of two Innovation Cohorts. These Innovation Cohort members will design innovative interventions using a human centered design process, and will deliver information and training to caregivers. There will be a three-fold evaluation process for the project: researchers at Texas A&M University will conduct a systems-level evaluation, Thrive staff will conduct caregiver intervention level evaluation, and a local external evaluator will conduct summative evaluations of the caregiver interventions.
