Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) Education's Sex Ed Equity (S.E.E.) Project - Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) Education will use Tier 1 Teenage Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program funds to provide medically accurate and age-appropriate evidence-based programs (EBPs) teen pregnancy prevention and services with the aim of advancing health equity for hard-to-reach youth where high unmet needs are present. Youth of color, primarily those who are Black and Latine/x, in regions of California and Nevada, have adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates higher than the national average, compounded by stigma and structural barriers to accessing basic health and sex education, as well as community resources. To address this crisis, the Sex Education Equity (S.E.E.) Project is a critically resourced initiative, levied by PPMM Education, to mitigate the devastating public health consequences expressed in communities afflicted by racism, impoverishment, and a political devaluation of personal and shared health outcomes. Moreover, as sexual and reproductive health services become embattled and restricted, PPMM Education’s S.E.E. Project partners agree that it remains critical to make sustainable investments to deeply embed inclusive sex education in settings where youth learn, are being mentored by caring, inclusive adults, and are receiving safety net services. The PPMM S.E.E. Project is thus driven by transformational capacity building, seeded by decades of partnership building, and dedicated to systems change that increases access to comprehensive sex education by considering the disparities, stigma, and access barriers compounded for youth living within the selected settings. As the S.E.E. Project’s focus is to address critical unmet sex education and health care linkages for youth, especially youth of color in geographic areas where PPMM currently offers services and has forged strong community partnerships, implementation will occur in Kern and Tulare counties in California, and Washoe County in Nevada. Moreover, the S.E.E. Project takes into account persistent disparities as they layer onto geography and will focus on the following four (4) settings: (a) clinics, (b) outreach and after-school sites operated by community-based organizations (CBOs), (c) detention centers (e.g., juvenile justice facilities), and (d) schools, including charter schools and court-operated schools. The S.E.E. Project will reach at minimum 2,035 individuals each year through a robust network of partners, including youth, who will be engaged and contribute meaningfully in design, implementation, and monitoring phases. PPMM is the largest affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, an IRS-recognized 501c3 organization offering low-cost family planning, reproductive health services, primary care, and educational services since its founding in 1963. PPMM Health Centers had close to 350,000 visits to its 35 health centers in 2022. PPMM Education reached more than 131,000 individuals in 2022 and plays a vital role in California and Nevada by providing the populations of its 42 county services and is a trusted provider of sex education, youth development programs, community outreach, and capacity building programs for local organizations that want to deliver sex ed directly in their community. PPMM tailors its education programs to meet the needs of diverse and under-served populations. Its goal is to reduce unintended pregnancies and STIs, while promoting responsible attitudes, behaviors, and communication related to sexuality and health. PPMM is uniquely suited within the vast swath of its California and Nevada service area to provide medically accurate, trauma-informed, and age-appropriate EBPs and services with the aim of advancing equity in adolescent health within hard-to-reach settings that face high unmet needs.
