Building on ten years of replicating evidence-based trauma-informed teen pregnancy prevention and positive youth development programs in Southeast Louisiana, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) aims to improve the optimal health of adolescents and reduce unintended teen pregnancy and the incidence of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) by using a systems-thinking approach to replicate effective, evidence-based programs and provide supportive services in targeted Louisiana communities. IWES requests support from the HHS Office of Population Affairs (OPA) to implement BY-LA 2.0, a revamped, scaled-up iteration of its trauma-informed adolescent reproductive health education initiative Believe in Youth-Louisiana (BY-LA). As an expanded holistic, multi-prong initiative, BY-LA 2.0 will include replication of two evidence-based adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) interventions, Get Real: Comprehensive Sex Ed That Works among youth in grades 6-8 and Reducing the Risk: Building Skills to Prevent Pregnancy, STDs & HIV among youth in grade 9; supplementation of ASRH education with mental and emotional wellness processing and skill-building; engagement of caregivers and families as key influencers in adolescents’ healthy decision-making; linkage of youth and families to coordinated adolescent and family-centered services; and collaboration with and capacity-building of stakeholders, community partners, school leaders, and service providers to maximize reach and programmatic impacts across Southeast and Northwest Louisiana in Orleans, East Baton Rouge, St. John, St. James, St. Charles, Terrebonne, and Caddo parishes (counties).
