In response to the Office of Population Affairs’ funding opportunity, Optimally Changing the Map for Teen Pregnancy, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (PPH) proposes community-responsive, youth-driven comprehensive sexual and reproductive health interventions to achieve optimal health for teens in two western Iowa communities – Woodbury County and Pottawattamie County. These counties have urbanized central towns surrounded by rural communities and farmland in the heart of the country’s agriculture and livestock industries. PPH and partners’ assessments and community awareness have led us to select two key groups of teens who have faced historical disparities in equitable access to healthcare, information, and opportunity: African American and Latinx teens. PPH has engaged current and new partnerships for the project including, Sanford Center and Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI). With partners and stakeholders, we will implement a three-year initiative with the goal to increase the community’s capacity to engage with African American and Latinx youth around their sexual and reproductive health in an effort to decrease teen pregnancy and STI rates in Iowa. We will achieve this through three primary objectives: (1) implement evidence-based programs in each community served; (2) mobilize parents, adults, and communities through outreach, education and training; and (3) provide continuous quality improvement by assessing progress toward outcomes and adjusting as needed. Evidence-based programs, community engagement through advisory councils and mobilization and awareness-raising will directly reach 350 youth in the first year and 1,004 in subsequent years. After three years, the program will meet the OPA goal to “have a significant impact on improving the optimal health of adolescents and reducing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).” PPH has been operating in the states of Nebraska and Iowa since 1934. Our mission is to provide, promote and protect reproductive and sexual health through health services, education and advocacy and education is core to our agency. Sanford Center has 87 years’ experience in youth and family services with singular trust and impact in the African American community. LSI has over 150 years of serving vulnerable children and families in Iowa through programs in adolescent pregnancy prevention, teen parenting classes, family well-being, mental health, support for people with disabilities, among others. PPH recently joined forces with Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota to form a five-state affiliate, Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS). PPH is an ancillary corporation of PPNCS and retains its 501c3 and this new affiliate enables us to leverage resources and power to bridge the gap between what is currently being done and what is possible. This includes innovative program solutions and sustainable mission growth to create meaningful change for our communities.
