In 2004, Trinity Church, Inc. (Trinity) began providing pregnancy prevention programming in Miami-Dade County, FL, primarily serving low income, at-risk, youth. Trinity is a nonprofit organization with over 19 years of experience in developing and operating programs to strengthen families in the areas of teen pregnancy prevention, positive youth development, healthy relationship education, and workforce development in order to help individuals achieve optimal health.
The purpose of the Trinity project is to saturate the target community with effective programs Love Notes 3.0 -Evidence-Based (Love Notes) and Reducing the Risk. Love Notes has been proven effective, through rigorous evaluation, to reduce teenage pregnancy and other associated risk factors. Reducing the Risk has been proven effective, through multiple rigorous evaluations, to delay sexual initiation and also had a positive impact on the incidence of pregnancy and other associated risk factors. Trinity seeks to replicate these results by providing as many youth and parents/caregivers as possible with the skills to decrease teen pregnancy and STIs and achieve optimal health as well as provide the necessary support services to ensure all needs are being met. Trinity and their direct service partner, FitKids of America, Inc., will deliver the effective teen pregnancy prevention program to 5,350 youth ages 12-19 annually that reside in 14 high need zip codes in Miami-Dade County, which have a combined teen birth rate of 35.7, almost three times that of Miami-Dade County (12.3) as a whole, and more than double the national average (17.4). Trinity will serve 12 middle schools, 14 high schools, 3 foster care & juvenile justice involved youth/group homes, and one pregnant parenting girls/educational programs, bringing the effective program saturation level to 41.3%. In addition, Trinity will provide education related to teen pregnancy and STI prevention, support services, and community resources to 3,750 parents/caregivers of program youth through events, workshops, curricula homework assignments, email blast, and a social media campaign in order to achieve optimal health.
Trinity intends to have a significant impact on reducing rates of teen pregnancy, STIs, and existing disparities among populations with the greatest need. Trinity will use a systems thinking approach to bolster the effects of the effective programs to have the greatest impact on optimal health and the prevention of teen pregnancy and STIs through the use of leverage points in the form of additional services. The leverage points include connecting participants to needed supports services, providing youth & families support services, mental & emotional health education, and human trafficking community workshops. Trinity will work with support service partners, Jessie Trice Community Health Centers, Pridelines, Kristi’s House, Chrysalis Health, Florida Department of Health-Miami, University of Miami, and Miami Bridges Youth & Family Services, to help youth and their parent/caregivers address risk factors and build protective factors to achieve optimal health. AMTC & Associates will provide Performance Measurement and Evaluation services for the project. In addition, the Trinity Community Advisory Group (CAG) and Youth Leadership Council (YLC) will provide stakeholder representation, oversight, and input for project implementation.
