Educating Nursing and Human Service Students to Identify... - The purpose of this project is to increase the use of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) in health and human service agencies in Brooklyn (Kings County) and its neighboring boroughs in the City of New York. The Departments of Nursing and Health and Human Services will train at least 600 students enrolled in its associate and baccalaureate programs, at least 50 faculty members within these two departments, and a minimum of 150 affiliate health and human services professionals from community agencies in SBIRT with the ultimate objective of integrating the use of SBIRT into academic curricula and professional practice. The goals of this project are to provide training to a minimum of 600 students in the SAMHSA SBIRT curriculum that incorporates didactic, practice and application of the model; facilitation in the use of SBIRT in student clinical practice settings; and documentation of the effectiveness of the training. Six hours of training in three sequential semesters will be provided for a total of 18 hours of training for each student. Training will include content on the diagnosis, epidemiology, impact, screening tools and strategies, identification of substance use disorders, brief intervention strategies, referral sources, skill practice and videotaped simulations. Students will also apply the content and skills in their usual clinical training each semester. Assessment of the training will be accomplished through the administration of pre and post-tests that evaluate knowledge acquisition, skill competence and attitudinal change. The project will also conduct focus groups with students and faculty to ascertain barriers to SBIRT implementation for the purpose of improving service delivery.
