The purpose of the proposed project, "Appalachian SBIRT Student Training," is to initiate an SBIRT training program for students in the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at Appalachian State University that will continue as part of our core interprofessional curriculum and increase the effective use of SBIRT throughout North Carolina and beyond. Trainees targeted include undergraduate (junior or senior) and graduate students in the CHS with particular emphasis on social work, nursing, nutrition/dietetics, health promotion, and athletic training as all students have clinical field placements for SBIRT completion. The following measureable objectives are targeted: 1) Adapt the SBIRT training curriculum to fit the needs and interprofessional curriculum available within the CHS; 2) Train faculty and staff who will be teaching and providing the training to students at Appalachian; 3) Initiate training of clinical supervisors and preceptors who will be overseeing student training in clinical practicum sites 4) Initiate student training and establish a system for assessment in practicum sites and an interactive web system for follow up with students post-graduation; 5) Work with the established Council of Directors to evaluate and modify, as needed, the integration of SBIRT training into the interprofessional curriculum within the CHS; 6) Establish an ASUlearn (online education platform) site to provide key aspects of training and collect all outcome data for the training program; 7) Create a systematic approach to increase the number of SBIRT-trained professionals in North Carolina and 8) Utilize ongoing and developing programs within the CHS to maximize access to rural, underserved populations throughout Western North Carolina and the state. Once the project is established, we will be training between 150 and 250 students per year in SBIRT.
