Implementation of SBIRT Student Training Program - Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) will implement the SBIRT Student Training Program for medical residents, nurses, dental hygienists and assistants, behavioral health and other health professions students in the Greater Youngstown, OH region. The training will enable participants to provide screening, brief intervention and to referral of patients at risk for substance use disorders to treatment, as well as leader-ship skills training necessary to "champion" SBIRT. Over the 3-year grant period, a total of 1,737 students will complete SBIRT training; including 282 residents (16%) and 1,455 students in other health professions (84%). SBIRT training will be provided to 94 residents annually enrolled in HMHP-affiliated residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Emergency Medicine, ENT, Transitional Residency, General Surgery and Orthopedics. HMHP expects that 33% of the residents trained will be racial/ethnic minorities, 54% female and 63% disadvantaged (i.e., educationally, language underrepresented minority, etc.). HMHP residents typically practice in FQHCs, rural and urban clinics, hospitals and private medical and dental practices. In addition, 485 other health professions students, including nurses, dental hygienists and assistants, behavioral health professions and other related fields will complete SBIRT training annually, of which 12-15% will be racial/ethnic minorities, over 50% will be female and over 50% will be from disadvantaged backgrounds. Upon graduation, these students are typically employed in FQHCs, primary care clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, physician and dental offices, trauma centers and other community health settings. All residents and students will be provided with leadership skills training designed to enable them to champion SBIRT in their respective professions.
