Recovery Oriented Drug Court Services - The Recovery Enhancement project is proposed as an enhancement of the Rapides Parish Drug Treatment Court serving adults in a rural area of central Louisiana. The enhancement strategies will improve case management, recovery planning and recovery support, screen for co-occurring psychiatric disorders, provide basic education for literacy and math skills, provide life skills training, and adapt evidence based practices for a sub-group of young men at risk. The present drug court program serves an adult population which is 64% male, 39% African American, and 60% Caucasian. Most of the clients have been charged with a drug-driven offense. Of the participants, 40% do not have a high school diploma or equivalent and 15% are on psychotropic medications. This drug court has been in operation for 12 years yet in spite of the successful development of this program, there are service gaps that hinder achievement of the full potential of the program. Many clients have limited literacy and math skills that hamper employment, while others have limited basic life skills and problem solving abilities. There is a sub-group of anti-social young men at risk of not completing the program due to lack of treatment engagement and failure to comply with drug court requirements. This sub-group is the focus of specific project enhancements. Service gaps include: need for improved case management, basic literacy and job skills; lack of focus on a special sub-group of treatment-resistant anti-social young men; need to screen all clients for psychiatric disorders and provide for integrated co-occurring treatment; and need to address long-term recovery and the need for individualized long-term recovery plans. Approximately 54 drug court clients will be enrolled in the enhancement project in the first year, an additional 61 clients will be added in year two, and another 60 clients in year three for an unduplicated total number of 176 clients served during the total project period.
