Taking Care of Business (TCB) - Women Accepting Responsibility (WAR) is a community based social service organization dedicated to serving vulnerable women in Baltimore, Maryland who will implement a project, entitled "Taking Care of Business (TCB)". The program will focus on providing assessments of the target population for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health and other conditions, creating effective transition plans from incarceration to community-based supported substance abuse treatment programs and related reentry services, including intensive strength based case management, trauma services, mental health services, primary medical care, and enabling services that are designed to ensure successful integration back into the community. This program targets adult African American women and Transgender women (male-to-female), who are 18 years or older and have been sentenced to incarceration as adults. The project will serve women who have histories of substance abuse and suffer from co-occurring mental health disorders. Many will have experienced some form of trauma, and are at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. Services will include: substance abuse, mental health, case management, trauma support, HIV/AIDS, housing, support services, and linkages to primary medical care. Major goals are: 1) To break the cycle of criminal behavior and substance abuse among women who encounter the challenges of alcohol and/or drug addiction(s), mental health problems, and have been exposed to trauma and high risk sexual behaviors; 2) To develop sustainable systems of care for adults needing substance abuse treatment and recovery support services, as they return to the community from incarceration; and 3) To assist adult female inmates in the transition from jail to the community.
