Enhancing Ohio's PDMP by facilitating access for health care providers - The proposed project will enhance Ohio's existing PDMP by improving access to prescription data located in other states and by enabling health care providers to access the PDMP data within their normal workflow processes. It is expected that better access to data will assist them in the early identification of individuals at-risk for addiction or overdose. The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy (OSBP) is the single state agency in Ohio responsible for administering and enforcing laws governing the legal distribution of drugs. In 2005, the Ohio Legislature passed legislation, which allowed the Board of Pharmacy to develop a Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) referred to as the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS) (O.R.C. 4729.75 - 4729.86). OARRS began accepting pharmacy prescription data on May 1, 2006. Currently, all data is electronically submitted consistent with the American Society for Automation in Pharmacies (ASAP) 4.1 format. The OSBP manages the collection and verification of required data from prescriptions for CII-CV controlled substance products and tramadol products. Data is analyzed, disseminated, and utilized in compliance with state statute. The work accomplished by these projects is expected to directly benefit (1) at least 50 physicians in one hospital system, (2) at least 5-10 physicians in a primary care group practice site, and (3) pharmacists in over 200 community pharmacies in Ohio. Each project has the potential for a much larger reach. The ultimate beneficiaries are the 11.5 million citizens of Ohio.
