Integration of Kansas Prescription Monitoring Program with State Health Information Technology - The Kansas Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), named K-TRACS, began collecting dispensing information in February 2011 and was fully operational by the end of that year. The Kansas Board of Pharmacy (KBOP) recognizes the importance of utilizing health information technology to improve the health and welfare of all Kansans and those in other states, and has an opportunity to do so with the K-TRACS system. As part of this project, K-TRACS will be forming collaboration with the Kansas Health Information Exchange (KHIE) that would enable practitioners to obtain K-TRACS information through their KHIE portal and provide more comprehensive care to their patients. In addition, KBOP recognizes the importance of integrating K-TRACS into other existing electronic health record systems in order to improve access to K-TRACS thereby reducing the nature, scope, and extent of prescription drug abuse while at the same time enabling patients with legitimate needs to obtain the treatment they need. KBOP plans to integrate its program with the KHIE by collaborating with the Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) to provide PDMP data when practitioners solicit dispensing information of their patients from the KHIE. KBOP also intends to expand utilization of PDMP data at the point of care by increasing the production and distribution of unsolicited reports and alerts to prescribers and dispensers of prescription data by integrating K-TRACS alerts into the electronic health records system of the largest provider of health care services in Kansas, the Via Christi Health network. Finally, the KBOP intends to increase utilization of PDMP data at the time of dispensing medications by integrating into the pharmacy software systems of at least one large retail pharmacy chain.
