The Bronx Treatment Alternatives for Safer Communities (TASC) HIV Initiative proposes to expand and enhance services to ensure that people with HIV, hepatitis and behavioral health disorders get appropriate integrated treatment. Annually 80 clients (400 clients over five years) will be identified and will receive testing for HIV and hepatitis, and screening, assessment and treatment for substance abuse, as well as mental health problems. Leading this program will be the Education and Assistance Center's (EAC) Bronx TASC program, with initial outreach and screening provided by the Bronx District Attorney's (DA's) Office. On-site testing following CDC guidelines will be provided at TASC, with follow-up HIV and hepatitis services and peer support, by Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Division of Substance Abuse (DoSA). The integrated program services proposed include: 1-Pretreatment identification. Individuals charged with drug use or possession and individuals who have drug abuse problems, and who may be at risk for hepatitis and HIV, will be identified by the DA's Office. 2-Pretreatment screening and selection. They will be referred to TASC which screens them for substance abuse and mental health problems, as well as co-occurring and medical disorders. Those found to have substance abuse or mental health problems, will be referred to treatment agencies with whom TASC maintains service agreements. 3-Pretreatment notification & monitoring. If individuals are found positive for HIV or hepatitis, with their consent, sex partners will be notified by TASC and offered testing for HIV and hepatitis.
