Turning Pointe for Families (Turning Pointe) will serve women who are pregnant or postpartum and who have co-occurring substance use and mental disorders in a new, culturally responsive, trauma-informed 16-bed residential facility located in Beckley, West Virginia. Turning Pointe will serve 208 women (unduplicated) with family-centered, strengths-based and trauma-informed residential treatment and supportive services over the three year grant period, and 330 children and other family members (unduplicated) will be provided assessment, early intervention, treatment, educational and prevention services during the same timeframe. An additional 7,300 women will be screened for substance use disorders in community-based primary care settings, utilizing SBIRT protocols. The primary goals of this project are: early identification and referral of substance abuse in women of childbearing age; improved access to and successful engagement in culturally and gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment for pregnant/postpartum women with co-occurring issues; higher rates of retention and successful treatment completion; and better health, social and economic outcomes for families through provision of evidence-based treatment, prevention, intervention and supportive services that are family-centered. Evidence-based practices will include Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, and the Nurturing Parents Training curriculum.
