The Birmingham Municipal Drug Court (BMDC) was established to provide sentencing alternatives to individuals arrested in the City of Birmingham who have a substance abuse problem. BMDC currently does not have a budget to pay for substance abuse treatment. Clients are referred to community programs, where they are often placed on long waiting lists. This project will add: 1) an intake specialist, who would be a recovering person who has been formerly incarcerated, who would meet with prospective clients within three days of their arrest, 2) a case manager who would work with clients who need more intensive services, and 3) a clerk who would collect and report information needed by BJA, CSAT and the court. It would also provide funding to an experienced nonprofit substance abuse treatment program, to establish a new intensive outpatient and recovery support services program that would solely service men and women referred by BMDC.
