The State of California, Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, a previously funded ATR grantee, is pleased to respond to the third ATR grant announcement to expand and enhance the California Access to Recovery Effort (CARE) program. CARE will continue to serve substance abusing youth (ages 12 through 20) in five target counties (Butte, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Shasta and Tehama), while expanding to meet the substance abuse needs of young service members and veterans (ages 18 through 25) returning to those counties from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Expanded services and program enhancements will focus on reducing health disparities among veterans, individuals living in rural communities, adolescent girls and young female veterans, racial and ethnic minorities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. We plan to serve at least 7,750 youth with a focus on adolescent girls, LGBT youth, individuals in rural communities, and racial and ethnic minorities to ensure they have equal access to services and opportunities for successful recovery and at least 2,250 young service members and veterans, and help to overcome barriers related to their seeking help.
