The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) proposes to implement a service program combining integrated substance abuse and mental health treatment, Critical Time Intervention case management and peer support into a comprehensive, 12-month system of care for homeless veterans. The program, Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking (MISSION-II), is a collaborative effort between UMDNJ, the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care System (VANJ) and Bloustein Center for Survey Research, Rutgers University. MISSION-II will target male and female homeless veterans with a DSM-IV diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence and a non-serious or persistent mental health problem, including PTSD, anxiety, depression and/or personality disorder. The project goals include reducing homelessness, substance abuse and psychiatric symptoms and improving employment and perceived physical health status. MISSION-II will achieve these goals by providing enhanced treatment and discharge planning, integrated treatment, peer support and vocational counseling to a total of 400 veterans (80 per year).
