NUMC WTC (WORLD TRADE CENTER) DUAL-FOCUS TREATMENT TRACK - The mental health and substance abuse problems in the World Trade Center (WTC) First Responders have been well documented in the literature. Although a high number of first responders (1 in 8, 12.4%) have suffered from PTSD symptoms according to findings of the WTC Health Registry from 2003-2004, the number of individuals who are at risk for chemical dependency issues is not as well documented. The CDC reported that 9.5% of responders tested positive on the CAGE questionnaire which looks at problems with alcohol consumption. This number is lower than those for PTSD (15.3%) but still a significant number. The goal of this project is to develop a treatment team to address the complex psychological needs of the WTC First Responders with chemical misuse disorders.
