Dr. Izquierdo began the clinic with a desire to provide healthcare to the vulnerable Hispanic/Latinx population of the Bronx. UHP's mission is to "continuously improve the health of communities and the quality of life of the people we serve by providing affordable, comprehensive, quality, primary and specialty health care and by assuring the performance and advancement of innovative best practices.". In 2002, UHP was designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). UHP received the FQHC designation for primary care, dental health, and mental health and has maintained those designations for the last 20 years. UHP operates 12 health centers, one mental health center, 12 school based health centers, and three part-time clinics which are all located within the communities of Bronx, Corona, Queens, and Central Harlem. UHP provided primary, dental, and mental healthcare to 84,735 patients in 2021. Of those patients, over 72% (61,362) reported being at 100% and below the federal poverty guidelines. In 2021, UHP provided mental health services to the community, totaling 11,959 clinic visits and 32,700 virtual visits. Within those visits, 404 patients were diagnosed with SUD, 4,407 with depression and other mood disorders, 4,544 with anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, and 7,013 with other mental disorders, excluding drug or alcohol dependence. At some UHP sites, PHQ2 depression screening scores revealed that at least 20% of UPH patients are experiencing depression. At some UHP sites, PHQ2 depression screening scores revealed that at least 20% of UHP patients are experiencing depression. UHP will obtain accreditation through ACGME for a 6-6-6 Psychiatry Medicine Residency Program through the collaboration of community training partners that include BronxCare Health System. UHP will matriculate its first class by July 1, 2025. UHP has provided the community with quality healthcare and truly believes it is a fundamental right and should not be based on a person's level of income or the type of insurance they hold. UHP would be able to extend that mission if funded through the Teaching Health Center Planning and Development Program grant to future psychiatrists. UHP can educate and prepare future practitioners for underserved populations' healthcare struggles and instill cultural sensitivity in patient care.
