GOALS: The two goals for Access Health Louisiana Teaching Health Center (AHLTHC) are: 1. Develop a new accredited community-based residency program in family medicine in the greater New Orleans, Louisiana area that is ready to begin training its first class of residents in July 2025. 2. Articulate a sustainable plan to support long-term resident training in family medicine in the greater New Orleans, Louisiana area. TARGET POPULATION: The service area comprises four of the 13 parishes in which AHL operates. These are Orleans, Jefferson, St. Benard, and Plaquemines Parishes. The total population in this service area is 930,466. Of this number 49.8% identify as White, 40.2% Black/African American, 9.5% Hispanic/Latinx, and 0.7 as other. Approximately 71% of residents in these parishes identify as low-income. The GNO is designated as Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) by HRSA. METHODOLOGY: Utilizing ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Family Medicine as the guide, AHLTHC will develop a robust curriculum, recruit quality faculty, and create a pipeline program to recruit, matriculate and graduate residents prepared ready to obtain board certification in family medicine. While our residency program will be open to all applicants, we are especially interested in recruiting students from underserved backgrounds that mirror the populations within the GNO. We have partnered with LCMC Health, a non-profit health system operating in the GNO and will provide access to the clinical rotations required. In addition, AHL has worked closely with AHEC Southeast Louisiana for several years and will continue to do so. AHEC Southeast Louisiana has agreed to continue this partnership and if funded will provide technical assistance, program implementation, support services for information dissemination on healthcare issues, and participate in collaborative community-based research projects sponsored by AHLTHC. Our recruitment strategies include creation of pipeline programs with Minority Serving Institutions’ (MSIs), Hispanic Serving Institutions’ (HSIs), and Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ (HBCUs) undergraduate pre-medical/health programs. Initiation of the accreditation process will begin in May 2023. The team will spend approximately 6-12 months building the infrastructure, which includes solidifying the training sites within LCMC Health, and securing additional affiliation agreements and contracts. During the first 3 to 6 months of the project the educational vision and course development will be completed. A successful outcome of the project will be development of an accredited residency program in family medicine. A system will be developed with maximum flexibility and stability for data management. Retrospective data collection as well as pre-matriculation information will be collected. In addition to basic demographic reporting, pre-matriculation data will include social determinants of health information to provide appropriate support programs while in training for residents.
