Teaching Health Center (THC) Graduate Medical Education (GME) Payment Program - Brain Health USA (BHU) is committed to addressing the profound mental health needs of underserved and vulnerable populations by providing comprehensive psychiatric services and specialized residency training. Our program is specifically designed to serve low-income communities, minority populations, homeless individuals, and linguistic minorities. Through this grant, Brain Health USA seeks to enhance access to mental health services for these underserved populations, significantly contributing to the reduction of health disparities and the overall well-being of the community. The financial support from this grant will be crucial in expanding and sustaining these critical services and training initiatives. In Southern California, particularly among vulnerable and underserved populations, there is a significant deficit in mental health care access. Approximately 1 in 7 California adults experience mental health issues, with more acute shortages in underserved areas such as low-income communities and minority populations. In Los Angeles County, where the demand for mental health services is particularly high, about two-thirds of adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment due to limited availability of care and long wait times for services (California Health Care Foundation, 2022). The disparities are even more pronounced in racial and ethnic minority communities. Black and Latino Californians face higher rates of unmet mental health needs, with barriers stemming from systemic inequities, financial constraints, and a lack of culturally competent care (California Healthline, 2024). Brain Health USA is a new Psychiatry residency program whose sponsoring institution is accredited and designated by the ACGME. The primary training location is in Los Angeles, California, where the program will primarily serve low-income, minority, homeless, and non-English speaking populations. Our goal is to equip residents with the skills necessary to provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate psychiatric care, with a strong emphasis on serving vulnerable and underserved communities. The residency program will provide remarkable clinical and academic experiences for the resident trainees with an impressive scholarly research program with the FDA and University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Primary faculty are drawn from the current vast 40 plus board-certified psychiatrists with Brain Health USA as well as partnering clinical sites and several affiliated U.S. medical tenured professors. Residents within the Brain Health USA program will perform rotations at hospital sites that have not provided resident training in any prior academic year (AY). These new rotation sites are strategically selected to enhance the residents’ experience by exposing them to diverse clinical settings and patient populations, particularly those in underserved areas.
