Teaching Health Center (THC) Graduate Medical Education (GME) Payment Program - The objective of this project at Banyan Community Health Center, Inc. (www.banyanhealth.org) is to establish a new Teaching Health Center (THC) and secure funding to support resident Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) positions in our community-based psychiatry residency program. This initiative aligns with our commitment to address the growing demand for primary care physicians in underserved communities by expanding the graduate medical education (GME) capacity in our region to develop a sustainable community-based psychiatry residency program that utilizes an integrated primary and behavioral health care focus. As a new THC, we aim to develop a comprehensive residency program that will provide high-quality, community-based training for residents. Our goal is to enhance the healthcare workforce pipeline, particularly in medically underserved areas, while ensuring our residents receive education that equips them to provide culturally competent and patient-centered care. The funding provided by this award will enable us to create new residency positions, which are vital to meeting the healthcare needs of our local population. Our residents will serve a diverse and underserved population, with a particular focus on access to treatment, improve adherence to, and quality integration of licensed treatment for substance use disorders (SUD), SUD prevention, serious emotional disturbance (SED), serious mental illness (SMI), and co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (COD). Our community has historically faced significant barriers to care. Our community population includes Hispanic and African American populations, individuals with co-occurring disorders of substance use and mental health, homeless, and low-income populations. Our program is set to begin July 2025; it is a new program. The total resident FTE positions being requested to be funded under this program for all post graduate years of training are 12 (3-3-3-3)resident FTE. The number of residents requested to be funded under this program for the first AY 2025-2026 are 3 (3-0-0-0).
