Training Program in Molecular Metabolism - ABSTRACT The Molecular Metabolism Training Program (MMTP) at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) aims to train the next generation of academic scientists committed to preventing and treating obesity and its related disorders. Central features of the program include integration of cutting-edge platforms in ‘omics, microbiome analysis, animal physiology, imaging, and other technologies for analyzing metabolism; unique coursework in metabolism and metabolic disease, biostatistics, epidemiology, and computational analysis with a public health focus; and a collaborative faculty based at HSPH and adjacent institutions in the Longwood Medical Area. MMTP leverages the innovative training environment of a leading public health institution, enhanced by rigorous training in emerging molecular analysis tools. Trainees study both individual and population-level aspects of disease, benefiting from unique resources offered at a school of public health. The program’s 22 faculty mentors form a vibrant community studying multidisciplinary questions such immune system interactions with exercise or over-nutrition, microbiome effects on metabolism, lipid droplet and mitochondrial dynamics in metabolic homeostasis, and the role of metabolic flux in energy regulation during health and disease. Research addresses critical global public health challenges, including metabolic syndrome, lipotoxic diseases like type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, aging-related metabolic conditions, immunometabolism, and microbiome contributions to digestive health. In this competing renewal, we are requesting funding to support six new predoctoral students annually, enabling the T32 to train 30 students over five years. These students will pursue a PhD in Biological Sciences in Public Health, one of the nation’s top-ranked public health doctoral programs. With a proven record of attracting and supporting a highly qualified student body, MMTP will train a cohort of interdisciplinary scientists equipped to use innovative research methods to address fundamental questions in human metabolism.
