Furness, DMD Phone/Fax Number: 706.721.7019/706.723.0276 E-mail Address: afurness@augusta.edu Website Address: http://www.augusta.edu/dentalmedicine/index.php Funding Requested: $107,537 PURPOSE: The purpose of this program is to improve access to oral health care services and provide optimal HIV care and treatment for low-income people with HIV, to provide resources to advance HIV care and treatment to improve health outcomes, therefore, reducing health disparities for people with HIV; and to train dental students, dental hygiene students, and dental residents to deliver dental care to people with HIV. The Dental Reimbursement Program accomplishes this by defraying a portion of unreimbursed dental care costs recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. NEED TO BE ADDRESSED AND PROPOSED SERVICES: Basic restorative (fillings) and cleanings will be addressed through the use of this grant. Dental cavities and gum disease are the main reason people lose their teeth as adults. This grant increases access to vital oral health services needed, especially by this population group. POPULATION GROUP(S) TO BE SERVED: People living with HIV.
