The program defrays a portion of unreimbursed dental care costs incurred by treating low income people with HIV at accredited dental education programs recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD) is a CODA accredited dental school. The Department of Community Based Programs provides comprehensive clinical dental care in our Advanced Education in General Dentistry Programs in Miami Dade/Hialeah and in Pinellas County, Florida. The Hialeah program is a 24-resident two-year educational program while the Pinellas County program is a 12 resident month educational program. While both programs serve as a referral source for provision of dental care for HIV infected patients, the demand far exceeds currently available funding. Our existing partnership with this primary health entity, our internal capacity to deliver outstanding care to this at-risk population, and the high disease prevalence and dental need of persons living with HIV in Miami Dade and surrounding counties, provides us a unique ability to significantly impact oral health with these grant resources. In addition to the direct provision of dental care with grant funding, we will also propose interprofessional cross education in the area of HIV dental treatment, and in office HIV education for all patients of record.
