The coalition will prevent and reduce youth substance use by implementing the following strategies: Conduct research to understand current Staten Island youth and adult perception of alcohol and prescription drug abuse and disseminate materials to address those; collaborate with organizations who serve parents/caregivers of youth aged 9-18 to adopt research-based parent education for each age group; advocate for activities to increase protective factors for youth in and out of school; collect data through focus groups on local youth access to alcohol and prescription drugs; conduct compliance surveys to ensure retailers do not sell alcohol to minors, through media partnership, spotlight businesses making positive efforts to limit youth access; work with community boards to require RBS training for issuance of new liquor licenses; work with local and State Health Depts. and local professional societies to provide education to prescribers regarding "best practices" around controlled substances; educate community to conduct medicine cabinet checks and count pills; and host drug take back days to encourage Staten Islanders to discard unused medication, and work with DEA and local police to set up ongoing mechanism for safe drug disposal.
