The Reading Coalition Against Substance Abuse - The Reading Coalition Against Substance Abuse serves Reading, Massachusetts, a suburban area with a population of 24,747. The goals of the coalition are: (1) establish and strengthen collaboration among RCASA's partner organizations in support of the community's effort to prevent and reduce youth substance use; and (2) reduce substance use among youth in Reading, MA, and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the issues in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. The coalition will implement these strategies: 1. Targeted Alcohol Prevention Efforts: We will adapt a college level prevention model called APPLE for the high school and middle school settings in Reading. The STOP Act grant funds will enable RCASA to target a large population of local students at risk for alcohol abuse. The APPLE model promoted by the University of Virginia's Center for Alcohol and Substance Education (CASE) provides a framework to examine the school athletic environment in seven areas that impact student athletes' alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. 2. Targeted Alcohol Compliance Efforts: The second component of our proposed approach will focus on reducing access to alcohol We will continue to improve our Alcohol Compliance efforts in concert with local police and the Board of Selectman (Reading Liquor Licensing Board).
