Reducing Underage Drinking in Southern Kennebec County, Maine - Reducing Underage Drinking in Southern Kennebec County, ME is a project of theSouthern Kennebec Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP), a Drug Free Communities (DFC) funded coalition, hosted by Healthy Communities of the Capital Area, Inc. Through the use of environmental prevention strategies, an Action Team of community leaders will work to reduce underage drinking across 15 communities. This effort will support more comprehensive law enforcement activities, targeting two types of violations: a) high profile underage use, and b) those who furnish alcohol to minors. Enforcement details that involve alcohol retailers will be planned and implemented in cooperation with the business community. In addition, it will conduct a multifaceted public awareness campaign designed to build community awareness of the legal and related consequences of furnishing and underage use; the actions being taken to enforce the law; and the impact of those actions. Finally, it will use a detailed, local understanding of the problem as the basis for making changes in local rules, policies, and/or laws to help further reduce the problem. Work will be done in collaboration with the Maine Office of Substance Abuse and its statewide Maine Underage Drinking Task Force. These changes will be documented by student responses to the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, administered bi-annually to public school students across the State of Maine.
