The We Are One Albany State University project seeks to develop a multidisciplinary team of students, faculty, staff, administrators and community partners to build the infrastructure to assist the Albany State University (ASU) community to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral health problems such as depression and substance use/abuse that place them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. ASU is a Historically Black Institution located in rural Southwest Georgia. The goals of the project are: (1) assess the mental and behavioral health needs of ASU; (2) create a networking infrastructure to link ASU with health care providers from the Albany community who can treat mental and behavioral health problems; (3) develop culturally appropriate educational seminars, training programs and educational materials ; (4) create a campus community where We Are One, where the community is engaged in assuring that each student experiencing mental distress is identified, screened and referred. The project activities will include: (1) create a Suicide Prevention Coalition of ASU and community partners; (2) offer culturally appropriate educational seminars, training program KognitoCAMPUS suite to reduce stigma associated with seeking care; (3) create a university-based hotline and link it to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline; (4) develop a crisis response plan; (5) distribute culturally appropriate informational materials that address warning signs of suicide, describe risk and protective factors, and identify appropriate actions to take when a student is in distress; and (6) provide educational materials for families of students to increase awareness of potential mental and behavioral health issues of students enrolled at ASU. The project will ensure that the needs of youth at high-risk including, but not limited to LGBT, AI/AN, military family members and veterans are met.
