Project Summary
2020 AAFCO-FDA CVM Briefing
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership
association of state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal
feeds and animal drug remedies.
The 2020 AAFCO-FDA CVM Briefing provides an opportunity for AAFCO’s Board of Directors to
meet face to face with FDA CVM staff members with whom AAFCO interacts frequently during the year
as AAFCO conducts its business related to model regulations development and ingredient definitions
development. AAFCO and FDA CVM have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in effect until 2024
that recognizes the AAFCO ingredient definitions process, and this annual briefing is important to our
two organizations to keep the lines of communication open.
The AAFCO-FDA CVM Briefing offers a collaborative forum for the discussion of animal feed
scientific and regulatory topics. There is no registration fee charged to cover the expenses of providing
the meeting and associated travel expenses, audio/visual support, and meeting space.
Attendance is typically 12 people from AAFCO’s Board of Directors as well as an additional 10 people
from FDA CVM and ORA. Over the course of 3 days, the AAFCO-FDA CVM Briefing typically includes:
• Discussions with top CVM officials. In 2019, Dr. Steve Solomon and Dr. Terry Schell each met
with the AAFCO Directors
• Updates from FDA offices. In 2019, we had an update from OTED, ORA, and other FDA
offices.
• The face to face format is mutually beneficial to both organizations.
AAFCO intends to utilize grant funding to ensure the 2020 AAFCO-FDA CVM Briefing, which will be
held in the Gaithersburg MD area, provides both the AAFCO Board of Directors and the staff we interact
with at CVM with the insights we need to move forward to the benefit of the animal feed regulatory
agencies, state as well as federal. After the Briefing, we provide an update to our members on the key
discussion topics to keep our members informed.
