B Vitamins and One-Carbon Metabolism in Health and Disease - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT This R13 application aims to obtain partial funding for the “B-vitamins and One-Carbon Metabolism in Health and Disease” conference set to convene August 9-13, 2026, in Washington, DC. The meeting is part of the FASEB SRC series and has assembled biennially since its inception in 1986 and year 2026 will mark the 40-th anniversary of the conference. The meeting aims to assemble basic scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, and public health experts to present and discuss the latest research in B-vitamins and one-carbon metabolism (OCM) and generate integrated knowledge. It brings together prominent experts in the field from all-over the world and the promising young scientists, students and postdocs. The Specific Aims of the conference are: 1) Convene the world experts, junior investigators, and trainees working in areas of B-vitamins and OCM, to present, discuss and analyze the most recent, cutting-edge research, with special emphasis on unpublished studies; 2) Engage the students, trainees and investigators who are new to the meeting, to present and discuss their work, interact and receive feedback from experts, establish collaborations and professional connections; 3) Promote participation in the conference by providing travel support to students and trainees for outstanding oral and poster presentations and travel funding assistance for invited speakers. The Scientific Aims of the 2026 meeting include: 1) Integrate new epidemiological data on B-Vitamins deficiencies in the modern world: links to malabsorption, malnutrition, infectious/chronic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. 2) Evaluate data on the transgenerational link between the maternal/paternal B-vitamins/OCM status and peri/post-natal offspring health: links to obesity, diabetes, neurological/psychiatric/developmental disorders. 3) Update advances in science and clinical practice for diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of the inherited metabolic disorders in B-vitamins & OCM pathways. 4) Evaluate efficacy of peri-conceptional B-Vitamins interventions in improving biomarkers and overall infant health. 5) Assess the latest data on genomic and epigenomic effects of the B-Vitamins and OCM status in health and disease. 6) Integrate new developments on the role of B-vitamins and OCM in cancer prevention, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment. 7) Discuss latest developments on the “two sides of the coin” argument with regard to B-vitamins supplementation/fortification. Specific aims will be accomplished over 8 sessions including invited speakers’ presentations and short talks from young scientists’ abstracts, two poster sessions (2h each), & 3 professional development sessions: “Career opportunities in Academia and Beyond”, “Writing successful grant applications” and “Meet the Editor”. A Plenary session “40 years of B-vitamins & One- Carbon Metabolism conference: achievements, directions and goals for the future” will define future directions for the meeting. Informal interactions among attendees during meals, breaks, poster sessions and outdoor recreational activities are frequent, and personal interactions ensue new ideas, research directions, collaborations, promote professional development of young investigators, and energize the future of the field.
