2026 Microbial Stress Response Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar - This proposal requests support for the 2026 Microbial Stress Response Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) and Conference (GRC) to be held July 19-24 at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. The Microbial Stress Response GRS/GRC has a long history of providing an exceptional, highly interactive forum for presentation of cutting-edge work in microbial biology. Bacteria and Archaea persist in environments ranging from the polar ice caps to the intestines of mammals. They face a nearly constant onslaught of various stressors, including nutrient limitations, temperature changes, osmotic and redox stress, antibiotics, bacteriophage, host immune systems, and more. Consequently, microbes have evolved finely tuned and sophisticated regulatory mechanisms for responding to stress by controlling genome replication and repair, protein quality control, RNA processing and modification, transport across membranes, genome reprogramming, detoxification functions, and both central and secondary metabolisms. Collectively, these responses enable survival in a range of fluctuating and contrasting conditions. The primary objective of this conference is to foster interdisciplinary research by attracting scientists with a wide range of expertise and backgrounds – from molecular dissection to system-based biology and from single cell analysis to community interactions – all of whom share an interest in how microbes of medical, environmental, and biotechnological importance adapt to different forms of stress. The 2026 Conference will feature prokaryotic mechanisms for sensing, responding, and adapting to stress, will bring together individuals with different perspectives presenting breaking new data, and will set the stage for paradigm shifts and in-depth discussions. Extensive poster sessions will also be a feature as well as plentiful time for informal interactions during free time or over meals. More specifically, the aims of this conference are to discuss unpublished cutting-edge research covering all areas relevant to Microbial Stress Response (Aim 1), strengthen the interconnectedness of the community of researchers devoted to understanding microbial stress responses (Aim 2), and promote the careers of students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty (Aim 3).
