SEGURA: Supporting Ethical Governance and User Rights in AI Mobile Applications - The SEGURA (Supporting Ethical Governance and User Rights in AI Mobile Applications) project addresses critical gaps in consumer trust, transparency, and ethical governance related to AI-driven mental health applications. As AI-based mobile mental health tools rapidly proliferate, unresolved concerns regarding transparency in AI usage, data privacy, cybersecurity, and ethical practices impede widespread consumer adoption. SEGURA systematically engages diverse stakeholders, including consumers, health professionals, scientists and industry, to generate foundational knowledge, informing policies and frameworks that enhance transparency, ethical standards, and consumer trust in AI mental health technologies. Employing a multi-method approach involving bilingual focus groups, a modified Delphi panel, systematic policy analysis, and a large-scale bilingual consumer survey, SEGURA aims to: (1) identify and clarify consumer and professional concerns through focus groups and consensus-driven statements about AI transparency and data use; (2) evaluate the alignment, strengths, and gaps in existing legal, policy, industry, and academic frameworks governing AI transparency and ethical practices; and (3) assess consumer understanding and acceptance of AI transparency statements through surveys. SEGURA establishes a new paradigm of consumer-centered AI. SEGURA's findings produce actionable guidelines and policy recommendations promoting transparent and ethical AI practices, enhancing data privacy and security, and supporting responsible innovation. By deeply engaging multiple stakeholders, SEGURA significantly contributes to trustworthy AI adoption in mental healthcare, directly aligning with NIH priorities concerning the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging technologies.
