PROJECT SUMMARY We propose a Diversity Supplement for Dr. Ernesha Webb Mazinyo to provide her the appropriate setting, training, individualized mentoring and research experience necessary to launch her career as an independently- funded implementation scientist. In order to achieve this goal, Dr. Webb Mazinyo will receive mentoring and research support, didactic coursework in dissemination and implementation science (D&I), hands-on research experience including primary data collection and mixed-methods analysis, and assistance with grant writing and manuscript preparation. Dr. Webb Mazinyo will be mentored by Drs. Annika Sweetland (PI), Andrew Medina- Marino (site-PI, Co-I) and Milton Wainberg (Co-I), to advise her as she pursues D&I research focused on integrating TB, depression and hazardous drinking (HD) treatment within primary care. Drs. Sweetland, Medina- Marino, and Wainberg have relevant methodological expertise in D&I science and mixed-methods research; topical expertise on the intersection of TB, depression and HD; and a successful track-record mentoring early investigators. This application builds upon the parent-study by expanding the scientific scope to include HD among TB patients with and without depression. Dr. Webb Mazinyo will participate in all research activities related to the parent study, including the preparation and submission of scientific papers/proposals, along with didactic and career development activities. Dr. Webb Mazinyo’s hands-on research will include two research aims: AIM 1: To leverage parent study data to estimate the prevalence and social correlates of HD among TB patients with and without depression. AIM 2: To investigate contextual factors and potential barriers/facilitators to integrating treatment for depression and HD within the TB care platform. Taken together, the research activities proposed for this Diversity Supplement will develop Dr. Webb Mazinyo’s D&I research skills and will provide the structure and support needed for her to become a highly successful independent researcher able to address integration of treatment for HD for patients with TB in South Africa and other low-resource settings. Our main objective is to support Dr. Webb Mazinyo to apply for and obtain a K01 award to support her goal of becoming a researcher of the highest caliber in the field of D&I.
