MOCADSV Enhancing Capacity for Sexual Violence Prevention Coalition's Project - Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MOCADSV) will use funding from the Center for Disease Control Rape Prevention and Education: Enhancing Capacity for Sexual Violence Prevention Across State and Territory Sexual Assault Coalitions grant to advance MOCADSV’s capacity to provide sexual violence primary prevention services and address the health disparities for the LGBTQ+ target population. MOCADSV will accomplish this by using data to inform project activities and strategies, and collaborating with the Missouri state health department on a state action plan to prevent sexual violence. A multisector health equity approach addresses the underlying contributors to sexual violence and subsequent inequities (harmful social norms, weak community responses to hold perpetrators accountable, housing insecurity, inaccessible services) and promotes communities that support safe relationships and equitable policies. While rape and abuse occur in all communities, research shows that specific, marginalized communities have disproportionately higher rates. In order to prevent abuse and achieve significant reductions throughout diverse communities in Missouri, disparities in victimization rates must be understood and addressed. Inequities in rates of sexual violence, like other inequities that compromise health and safety, result from differences that are considered unfair and unjust. Inequities are related both to historic and present-day practices and policies of public and private institutions that result in diminished opportunity for certain populations. MOCADSV’s health equity approach seeks to understand, and then to address, the factors that contribute to unnecessary, avoidable, unfair, and unjust inequities, and to promote an equal opportunity for individuals to be safe in their relationships, homes, and communities. MOCADSV will also increase partnerships and collaborations to include additional expertise and skills on health inequities and the needs of Missouri’s LGBTQ+ communities. Collaborations will include, but are not necessarily limited to, college/university campuses, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Office on Minority Health, and local public health agencies. MOCADSV will accomplish this objective by identifying key community stakeholders and engaging their participation in project activities. Additionally, MOCADSV will continually assess Missouri domestic and sexual violence agencies’ capacity to provide primary prevention services and incorporate LGBTQ+ specific services into their respective programs. MOCADSV will accomplish this objective through dissemination of available data sources, conducting capacity assessments of member agencies and collaborative partners, providing topic-specific training and technical assistance services, and developing actionable strategies to build Missouri’s overall capacity for sexual violence primary prevention.
