Increasing capacity to implement data-driven primary prevention in Michigan. - The Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCEDSV) is proposing to implement approaches toward the primary prevention of sexual violence that reflect the outer layers of the Social Ecological Model (SEM) and to address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) at the community and societal levels of the SEM. Using evidence-informed strategies, MCEDSV will work to reduce risk factors for and increase protective factors against sexual violence perpetration. Sexual violence remains a pervasive issue within Michigan’s communities, impacting individuals, families, and society at large. This grant project seeks to address this critical issue through a multifaceted approach focusing on two key areas: enhancing family-friendly workplace policies and improving school climate and safety measures. The project aims to empower families by advocating for and implementing family-friendly workplace policies that support work-life balance, parental involvement, and healthy family dynamics. By partnering with MCEDSV member organizations and public health organizations, we will promote initiatives such as flexible work schedules, parental leave policies, and supportive workplace cultures. MCEDSV will work to develop workplace policies and practices that are equitable and inclusive and help employers ensure equitable career growth opportunities. Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen family bonds, reduce stressors on caregivers, and create environments that are rooted in strengthening economic supports. Simultaneously, the project will focus on fostering safer and more inclusive, protective school environments through targeted interventions aimed at improving school climate and safety measures. MCEDSV will work to increase policies related to school-based climate by reviewing the current comprehensive sexual health curriculum and provide guidelines and recommendations on what should be in a comprehensive curriculum. Next, MCEDSV will be conducting trainings virtually and in-person so that stakeholders across Michigan can become members of their sex ed advisory board (SEAB). Lastly, MCEDSV will build a training of trainers (ToT) on how to select, review, and evaluate prevention curriculum. The project will utilize a combination of research, advocacy, training, and community engagement to achieve its objectives. Through data collection and analysis, we will assess the effectiveness of implemented policies and interventions, continuously refining our approaches to maximize impact. Additionally, we will provide resources and training to stakeholders, such as our Michigan State Leadership Team, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, Michigan Public Health Institute, and other community and state-wide allies. We will continue utilizing the input and feedback from MCEDSV’s entire team of over sixty employees to build capacity and sustain positive changes beyond the grant period.
