Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning - Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning (CPLP) is a volunteer advocacy organization located in the City of Rochester, New York and is housed at Causewave Community Partners, Inc. (Causewave). CPLP is dedicated to eliminating childhood lead poisoning and other environmental home health hazards in Rochester and surrounding communities in Monroe County through education and outreach, establishing priorities and best practices, and working towards public policy change. The Coalition’s membership and board are comprised of 40+ representatives from a variety of sectors who bring their expertise to bear on making our community safer from lead as well as other environmental health hazards. CPLP is well versed in working with and educating all members of the community—from mothers in a WIC office, to Karen-speaking refugees from Myanmar, to elected representatives, to individual homeowners concerned about possible lead hazards. Since the 2005 passage of Rochester’s lead law, CPLP has worked to support the implementation of this policy, sustain education and partnerships to prevent lead poisoning, and actively disseminate lessons learned to dozens of other cities. Currently, CPLP is an all-volunteer-run organization utilizing staff support from Causewave. With this funding, a Program Director will be hired to oversee and expand the work of the CPLP, both locally and nationally. Within the first 12-months, the Program Director will work with community partners to reduce the number of children reporting with lead poisoning in Monroe County by 8% and will also increase BLL testing in Monroe County by 8%. They will also work to increase the knowledge of 400 parents and expectant mothers on how to protect their families from the dangers of lead, increase the number of Renovation, Repair, and Painting classes held for property owners by 10%, and distribute 1,000 pieces of Educational and Outreach materials.
