The burden of childhood lead exposure in Illinois remains one of the highest in the nation. Older homes with deteriorated lead paint continues to be the primary source of lead exposure in Illinois. Based on a national survey, 65 percent of pre-1978 Illinois housing units have lead-based paint, and of those 72 percent have significant lead hazards. Lead risk evaluation is conducted using the Illinois Childhood Lead Risk Questionnaire to determine potential lead exposure hazards. One question pertains to the high-risk geographic area. Illinois has designated high risk zip codes based on a variety of considerations, including housing age and poverty rates. We provide funding through grant agreements with many of our Local Health Departments to conduct case management and environmental services. In addition, we provide training for these agencies and ongoing reviews and guidance to ensure successful outcomes. For those that choose not to participate in the grant, IDPH employs its own case managers and risk assessors who perform the required health intervention in those areas. Illinois maintains data in HHLPSS to track blood lead test results and ensure follow-up for children with elevated blood lead levels. Additionally, we provide referrals and linkages to supportive health and educational services. We work closely with many partners to assist in our efforts, including: Immunization Program, Vital Records, Minority Health Services Refugee Health, Plumbing and Water Quality Program, DHS, WIC, IEPA, and ATSDR. In addition to providing these services, we plan to roll out a statewide PR Campaign to bring awareness to the effects of lead exposure and the importance of lead risk evaluation and testing. There is no safe level of lead in the body. Illinois continues to collaborate with local agencies, federal, state and local partners to eliminate the incidence of childhood lead poisoning. Our vision is to provide a lead-safe environment for all children.
