The purpose of the Iowa Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) program is to maintain and enhance the capabilities of a statewide network including a public portal that presents data used in support of actions that improve the health of Iowa communities through prevention or mitigation of impacts of environmental hazards. This includes efforts to build awareness and capacity within local agencies to access data through the network. The program also aims to participate in and contribute to the National Tracking Network. EPHT efforts in Iowa are an integral component of the IDPH department wide data management program to use data to help reduce the burden of environmentally related exposures and diseases on the Iowa population. The Iowa Department of Public Health proposes to expand the content and innovate new functionality on the Iowa Public Health Tracking Network to better utilize the data it collects or maintains to inform public health policy and drive public health action. The availability of additional data and tools for analysis and linkage are needed by researchers, public health authorities, health care practitioners, and the public to have a better understanding of the possible associations between the environment and adverse health effects. Throughout the five year project period IDPH will maintain and enhance a statewide network including a public web-based portal; collaborate with partners and stakeholders to direct expansion; integrate and disseminate health and environmental data and use it in support of actions that improve the health of Iowa communities; identify and address health disparities and inequities; build awareness and capacity among public health and non-public health audiences through outreach and training to access and use data through the network; and implement a comprehensive evaluation strategy to document program successes and demonstrate measurable impact.
