This proposed project builds on more than 10 years of previous work conducted by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) as part of the CDC BRACE Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative, including the selection of extreme heat, extreme cold, and vectorborne diseases as climate hazards of key concern for the State of Maine; the development of data systems to measure the impacts of these exposures to support timely interventions and evaluation; the identification of potentially vulnerable populations; and engagement with key stakeholders to design, implement, and evaluate effective interventions to protect Mainers from these climate-related health hazards. During the most recent BRACE award, Maine largely focused its activities on building resilience to vectorborne diseases. The work we propose here will allow Maine to shift its focus back to building individual- and community-level resilience to the previously identified hazards of extreme heat and cold, and to expand activities to include pollen as a new climate hazard of concern. Specifically, Maine CDC will: 1) partner with the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to develop or update county-level extreme temperature response plans; 2) Develop an Extreme Temperature Community Resilience Guidebook; 3) Partner with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to design and establish a statewide pollen monitoring network and convene a pollen stakeholder group; 4) Develop a comprehensive extreme temperature communication campaign; and 5) Create a web-based Climate Impact Compendium, which will include climate and health-related data and measures in a dashboard format, framed by and integrated with information on related findings and communications products.
