The overall goal of this project is to provide a consistent and scientifically sound approach for radiation protection in the United States, and to prevent or reduce unnecessary radiation to all populations through cooperative efforts of state and federal radiation control agencies, as well as involvement of state and local public health agencies and other experts in radiation protection. The radiation protection issues identified will be addressed by the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of practice-and evidence-based strategies and tools, including guidance, workshops, tools, and training that can lead to accomplishing this goal. The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD), a national non-profit professional organization whose membership is made up primarily of the directors and radiation professional staff of state and local radiation control programs throughout the United States, will use multi-faceted methods in addressing the issues, including multi-organizational working groups, which will enhance the partnerships with other radiation protection and public health organizations; provision of technical, environmental, and emergency response guidance; presentations at conferences; and training and workshop opportunities on radiation protection issues. The following are outcomes that we expect to achieve by the end of the project period: • Improved availability of guidance and best practices for the radiation protection community to better protect the public from unnecessary radiation. • Better informed public health decision making by federal, state and local agencies using radiation science best evidence and experience to improve protection of workers and the public from unnecessary radiation. • Improved radiation protection practices and communication by state, local and federal agencies to benefit workers and the public. CRCPD plans to focus on the following strategies and activities during the course of the project: • Develop guidance and recommendations to protect the public from unnecessary radiation in consultation with CDC, concentrating initially on technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material and respiratory protection needs for emergency workers. • Develop radiation training modules for state and local public health to better protect public from unnecessary radiation, particularly with regard to population monitoring and other radiological emergency response guidance. • Develop/update suggested materials for state and local radiation programs for the protection of workers and the public, with emphasis on new medical radiation technologies and emerging radiation protection issues. • Identify and assist CDC in the development of content of additional topical areas for the CDC Radiation web page for better informing the public. • Continue to promote and support of the Radiation Response Volunteer Corps. • Collaborate with other radiation professional organizations and public health organizations, as well as alliances, in finding solutions to radiation protection issues. • Convene working groups of CRCPD whose expertise lies in the topic under consideration, with the assistance and input from other radiation and public health experts. • Provide outreach and share results with agencies, organizations, and the public.
