Component 1 and 2: Spartanburg School District Consortium Promotion of Adolescent Health through School-Based HIV Prevention - Purpose: The overall purpose of the project is to improve the health and wellbeing of Spartanburg County youth 13-19 years old by (1) improving data collection through Youth Risk Behavior Survey and School Health Profiles, coordination among the local health department and local school agencies, and awareness of how policies, practices, and procedures affect health outcomes (Component 1) and (2) improving STI/HIV education for all youth in public schools and collaborating with community partner to expand service offerings to vulnerable youth that experience health disparities (identified through local data as African American and LGBTQ+ youth) (Component 2). Increasing data driven strategies, policies, and programs through community-school partnerships will influence not just the youth of today but future generations of teens in Spartanburg. This request supports a multi-component model partnership with four local school districts, community partners, and healthcare providers to support adolescent health and wellbeing through school-based HIV/STD Prevention including sexual health education, linkages to sexual health services, and safe and supportive environments. Under the leadership of School District 7 (fiscal agent and responsible agency), Spartanburg School District Consortium (SSDC) consists of four school districts (Districts 1, 2, 3 and 7) in Spartanburg County, SC that will reach 13,410 youth annually with the required activities for Component 2: 5,640 middle school students (grades 6th-8th), 7,520 high school students (9th-12th), and 250 vulnerable youth at the county alternative school. SSDC represents 20 secondary schools. Outcomes: As a result of increasing sexual health education (SHE), access to sexual health services (SHS), and safe and supportive environments (SSE), SSDC will affect the following short-term outcomes: • Increase understanding of youth risk and behaviors by education and public health agencies. (Component 1) • Increase understanding of how school health policies and practices impact youth risk and behaviors. (Component 1) • By 2020, increase community collaboration to support school policies and practices by implementing into action no less than one recommendation from School Health Profiles annually. (Component 1) • Increase the capacity of teachers to effectively teach SHE by increasing their confidence and knowledge. (Component 2) • Increase student receipt of effective SHE by serving no less than 13,410 youth 6-12th grade. (Component 2) • Increase students access to SHS available offsite among all 8th-12th grade students via Connect Spartanburg website. (Component 2) • No less than 10% of students will receive referrals for SHS and other community services by school staff via Connect Spartanburg website. (Component 2) • Increase SSE through teacher implementation of best practices in classroom management by 25%. (Component 2) • No less than 250 vulnerable youth will receive a positive youth development intervention after school to build resiliency and promote SSE. (Component 2)
