Component 1: School-Based SurveillancePromoting Adolescent Health through School-Based HIV Prevention - The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) seeks funding through Promoting Adolescent Health Through School-Based HIV Prevention CDC-RFA-PS18-1807 for Component 1: School-Based Surveillance. This funding will enable NDDPI to participate in the administration and dissemination of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and the School Health Profiles (Profiles). The YRBS, a biennial survey completed by middle/junior high and high school students, monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability and social problems among youth, including tobacco use; unhealthy dietary behaviors; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drugs; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection; and behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. The Profiles, a biennial survey completed by principals and lead health teachers within middle/junior high and high schools, monitors the current status of school health education requirements and content, physical education requirements, asthma management activities, food service, competitive foods practices and policies, family and community involvement in school health programs, and school health policies related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention, tobacco-use prevention, violence prevention, and physical activity. Three specific outcomes will be accomplished through this effort. First, the YRBS and Profiles will be administered to selected schools throughout North Dakota, the YRBS on odd years and the Profiles on even years. In order to reduce burden on schools participating in the YRBS, the NDDPI and the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) will coordinate the administration of both the YRBS and Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) with one another. The second outcome is to disseminate the results of the YRBS and Profiles data to a multitude of agencies and organizations through meetings, conference sessions, documentation, brochures, and the NDDPI website. Lastly, these results will be used to address teen risk behaviors. The data will serve as guidance to NDDPI, school districts, community members, health agencies, and other state and local organizations in establishing short and long-term prevention goals, enhancing programs, guiding professional development, and developing policies and resources.
