The California Department of Education (CDE) is applying for continuing funding to implement Component 1: School Based Surveillance, as presented in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) RFA-PS18-1807 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). Specifically, the CDE will (1) collect, analyze, and disseminate scientifically valid data on adolescent health risk behaviors, including sexual risk behaviors, using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS); and (2) collect, analyze, and disseminate scientifically valid data on school health policies and practices, using the School Health Profiles (Profiles). Data collected will be used to guide program planning and improvement. The YRBS will be administered in odd-numbered years to students at selected high schools serving students in grades nine through twelve, and Profiles will be administered in odd-numbered years to principals and teachers at selected schools serving students in grades six through twelve. Survey implementation activities will be reviewed each cycle to identify improvements for future years to increase the quality of data and statewide institutionalization of the YRBS and Profiles. In conducting the review, staff capacity will be assessed, barriers and potential partners will be identified, and opportunities for collaboration with other agencies will be explored. The CDE will continually monitor progress toward goals and evaluate YRBS and Profiles program activities to ensure program success.
