The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (AK DHSS), Division of Public Health, Section of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (CDPHP) is applying for school-based surveillance funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). AK DHSS is requesting $100,000 per year for five years to continue and strengthen the implementation of the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles (SHP) in Alaska.
AK DHSS has coordinated the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in collaboration with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (AK DEED) since the YRBS was first conducted in Alaska in 1995. Alaska has achieved weighted statewide traditional high school YRBS data consistently since 2007 and weighted statewide alternative high school data since 2009. AK DHSS will continue to manage the YRBS in Alaska traditional and alternative high schools with the help of in-kind services and financial contributions from partners.
AK DEED administered the SHP through 2012, and AK DHSS has administered the SHP since 2014. Alaska has achieved weighted SHP principal data since 1998 and weighted lead health teacher data in 2000 – 2010 and in 2014 and 2016. The 2018 SHP is currently underway.
