The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (NDDHHS) seeks funding through Improving Adolescent Health and Well-Being through School Based Surveillance and the What Works in Schools Program CDC-RFA-DP-24-0139 for Component 3: State, Territorial, and Tribal School-based Surveillance, and Tier 1 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) incentivized option. This funding will enable NDDHHS to participate in the administration and dissemination of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and the School Health Profiles (Profiles).
The YRBS, a biennial survey completed by middle/junior high and high school students, monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability and social problems among youth including tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, unhealthy dietary behaviors, inadequate physical activity, and sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. The Profiles, a biennial survey completed by principals and lead health education teachers within middle/junior high and high schools, monitors the current status of school health education requirements and content, physical education requirements, food service, family and community involvement in school health programs, tobacco-use prevention, violence prevention, and physical activity. In order to reduce burden on schools participating in the YRBS, the NDDHHS and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) will coordinate the administration of both the YRBS and Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS).
Three specific outcomes will be accomplished through these surveillance efforts. First, administration of the YRBS and Profiles will increase awareness of youth risk behaviors and experiences, in addition to school health policies and practices. Next, as the only source of this data among adolescents in ND, NDDHHS will collaborate with interagency and external partners to make meaningful use of data through meetings, conferences, website updates, and the development of a public data dashboard. Lastly, short- and long-term trends in risk behaviors and policies will be evaluated to establish prevention goals, inform programs and policies, and guide professional development.
North Dakota has participated in school-based surveillance through the YRBS and Profiles since 1995, achieving reliable, weighted data in nearly every cycle. A growing number of users and requests for YRBS data serve as an indication that the surveys remain vital in ND and contribute markedly to informing programs and partners in the state.
