The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) requests funding to build on the work started by the Kansas Department of Education and continue the implementation of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles (Profiles) in Kansas. YRBS and School Health Profiles are a set of surveys provided to students grade 9 through 12. The YRBS survey categories include behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence, alcohol and drug use, tobacco use, unhealthy dietary behaviors and inadequate physical activity (plus obesity and asthma). Parental consent is secured, and the data is anonymous and reported in a way that ensures respondents and their families are not able to be identified. The state intends on including questions on Adverse Childhood Experiences and Positive Childhood Experiences on the YRBS survey. The School Health Profiles survey questions are related to school health policies and practices. The data collected help monitor changes over time, identify priority risk behaviors among adolescents, and evaluate and plan programs that are aimed to improve the health of youth. Key partners include CDC-funded public health programs, University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, and participating school districts.
